Anjan Bose
College of Engineering and Architecture
Anjan Bose was named to the National Academy of Engineering for his development of training simulators and computational tools for reliable power-system operation, and for contributions to education and research on power systems.
Professor Bose's research in the operation and control of the electric power grid has led to major breakthroughs in power system control technology that are in industrial practice today. His innovations, including better computer controls of electric generation and transmission systems to avoid blackouts, are utilized throughout the industry today. Bose developed the real-time computer simulator that is used to train power grid operators all over the world. He is an expert in methods of maintaining the reliability of the power grid in the face of power industry deregulation. He was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Energy to serve on a blue-ribbon power outage study team to examine several power outages in the East and Midwest. He has continued to be a technical leader in the industry and is a prominent consultant.
Biography
Anjan Bose is the Dean of the College of Engineering
and
Architecture. From 1993 to 1998, he was the Director of
the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science, which is the largest unit in the college. Before
joining Washington State University, he was on the
Electrical Engineering faculty of Arizona State
University, where he directed the Electric Power Research
Laboratory. He also has 10 years of experience in the
power industry developing the modern computer control
centers for the electric power grid.
Bose has served on the editorial boards of five journals
and has
organized many conferences including the prestigious
Power Industry Computer Applications conferences. He is
active in several international professional societies,
serving as chair or member of several technical
committees. He was appointed
by Washington State Governor Gary Locke in 1998 to the
Board of Directors of the Washington Technology Center
and now serves as Vice-Chair of the board.
Bose earned a B. Tech. (Hon.) in electrical engineering
at the
Indian Institute of Technology in 1967, an M.S. in
electrical
engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in
1968, and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Iowa
State University in
1974. He received a Certificate in Management and
Leadership in education from Harvard Graduate School of
Education in 2000.
